About Monica
As the owner of Realty ONE firms in Asheville and Hendersonville, Monica Rousseau believes
that some of our most impactful and worthwhile journeys start with a single step. She says,
“being an entrepreneur is all about mindset. You will have setbacks and unforeseen issues, but
you keep going. When I started Realty ONE, there was no Plan B; it had to work, and I did
whatever I had to do. It’s about having faith in yourself and surrounding yourself with great
people.”
Monica did not always dream of becoming an entrepreneur. In high school, she was drawn to
history, government, and economics and planned to work on Capitol Hill after graduate school.
However, as is usually the case, life had other plans, and Monica became a mother. She
became an educator and taught children with special needs for seven years and third graders
for two years. Her most meaningful work was within schools serving underserved students;
she’s grateful to continue to be close to the families whose lives she touched.
After fifteen years in Wilmington, Monica moved back to Asheville and decided to leave
education and move into real estate. While working for another firm, she was intrigued by the
model and values of Realty ONE Group Pivot; so she took a considerable risk three years ago
and opened a Realty ONE franchise. Building the offices and teams from nothing, Monica now
leads 51 agents across two offices. She says, “I wanted to create a space where agents could
be in the driver’s seat. We believe in the power of community and that we do business better
together; a rising tide raises all ships.” As a result, the firm has created a strong reputation built
on professionalism, integrity, and authenticity.
In the future, Realty ONE wants to continue to expand its services throughout Western NC and
partner with agents with similar values. Monica says, “we believe in supporting agents, even if
they don’t work with us. There are a lot of great companies in the area, and wherever you go,
we’re going to be cheering for you.”
Outside of real estate, Monica has raised a tight-knit family of five, with three daughters and two
sons. She says, “my children were always my priority, and I continue to keep them first because
they are the best thing I’ll ever do. I have tried hard to include them in the business, and it has
been amazing getting to share this journey with them every day.”
As a successful entrepreneur, Monica is always looking to give back. She is deeply involved in
Asheville’s business building and non-profit causes. She has helped expand various
entrepreneurship and small business programs through the Area Chamber of Commerce. She
is particularly proud of her work for WomanUp, a program hosted by the Chamber that connects
up-and-coming female entrepreneurs in the Asheville community.
She also passionately supports Safelight, a non-profit focused on helping survivors of
interpersonal violence. She says, “my mother, siblings and I are survivors of domestic abuse.
She left an abusive relationship during a time when there was no organization like Safelight to
help her. She was an incredible example of bravery and integrity. Safelight helps families
through the trauma of abuse transition into stable, joyful, and thriving lives.” Monica shares her
mother was the most influential person in her life, donating a room in her honor at the new
Safelight facility.
Fundamentally, Monica believes “we all have intrinsic value, and we’re all here for a purpose.
Together, there is nothing we can’t do.” With Monica’s giving spirit and driven nature, she is a beacon of hope and inspiration for entrepreneurs in Western North Carolina and beyond.
